The Wicked Wizard of Oz – Examining Popular Networking Project Ecosystems from Various Perspectives - Phil Robb, Ericsson Software Technology
Over the past 10 years we’ve seen an explosion of corporate collaboration within the Networking and Telco industries through open source projects. The organizations working on these projects explain in no-uncertain-terms the critical importance of their success for the future of the industry.

Yet, most of those involved in these projects wish for substantially faster progress. Everyone is working so hard and they are clearly dedicated to the success of their efforts. So why is it taking so long? Why isn’t progress faster? Why haven’t more developers and companies joined in the effort to speed things along?

In this talk, we will look at project priorities and the resulting cultural behaviors. We will look at the positive effects of the choices made along with other consequences that have been more unexpected. We will conclude by examining ways that we may wish to change the culture of these projects and/or reset expectations so that success is more readily apparent as it occurs.

Design and Deployment in Edge Computing: A Case Study - Matteo Di Pirro & Nicola La Gloria, Kynetics LLC
IoT has been spreading like wildfire: millions of small devices have been gathering an increasing amount of data to be computed to centralized data centers. Until now. That amount of data has become so massive to push networks to the limit.

Edge computing aims to solve this issue by processing the data close to where it is produced. This distributes data centers, moving them to the edge of the network and creating clusters of embedded devices. However, it also opens up to a number of novel issues: How do devices transmit data and commands? How do clusters interact with wider systems and users? To what extent can Docker containers be employed to speed up deployments?

In this talk, we will analyze those challenges w.r.t a real-world cluster of ARM computers. We'll look at the applicability of messaging protocols to send both data and commands within the cluster, how to implement the need of asynchronicity and how Docker containers can simplify deployments on top of a core embedded OS.

The O-RAN SC RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller): xApp API, and the Northbound - A1, O1 - and Southbound Protocols towards eNB/gNB: E2AP, E2SM - Thoralf Czichy, Nokia & Matti Hiltunen, AT&T
The O-RAN SC’s RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller) is an open-source container-based implementation of the RIC concept and protocol specifications as standardized by the O-RAN alliance. Its second half-yearly release is almost ready and targeted for June 2020.

This presentation will focuses on the capabilities added in the second release after giving an overview of the RIC. This release includes (1) significant changes when adapting the base E2AP implementation from pre-specification assumptions to the first version approved by the O-RAN alliance, (2) supporting newly O-RAN specified E2 SMs (service models) like the NI (network interface) SM and KPIMON SM providing E2 nodes, like a gNB, a way to report interface messages & KPIs, and to change E2 node behaviour via NI policies, (3) changes in the API to be used by RIC xApps, (4) support for the O-RAN O1 management interface, and (5) support for the O-RAN A1 policy steering interface between the management system and the RIC.

Lightning Talk: Goodbye Aloha...Hello Future Cities - Jonathan Gael, M2M Bell
The main problem in LTE networks for massive IoT traffic, is not in the transmission however, it is in the network access and priority traffic abilities in the 5G random access channel (RACH). Future cities can expect over 100K nodes within the range of a master 5G cell, where if a measly 1% request to transmit at the exact same time we will have the same type of network problems that the broader Internet is widely known for, including security and performance as functions of packet efficiency. Therefore, we present DQ switching as a method to eliminate the latency and jitter that is caused by the type of networks that send payload data packets over and over, following packet collisions in the air with random backoffs. The 1960's Aloha method in use today is fine when things are slow, but its best-case theoretical performance is ~50%. Conversely, DQ automatically shift from random access to a Dual Queue reservation system which runs in the background of payload data, resolving packet collisions, and serving a theoretically infinite node count with ~100% efficiency.  Finally, DQ is universal, designed for simultaneous synchronous and asynchronous packet flows on a single channel (and saving half the power per bit transferred versus any IEEE 802.x.x).

The combination of 5G and AI brings new challenges of deep integration of CT and IT.
Various types of intelligent network applications have emerged, in various network professional fields as well as network management fields. ITU, ETSI, and TMF have defined a series of application scenarios, classification standards and reference architectures. However, how to improve the overall intelligence of the end-to-end network in a corss-vendor scenario still remains open.
To this end, we provide a set of reference implementations for the application of the autonomous driving network hierarchical system in the intelligent energy management for both core and edge data centers. ONAP is used as a common infrastructure for cross-domain network intelligent application scenarios. With simple template design and configuration adjustment, ONAP can quickly adapt to different operators' requirements for different autonomy levels in specific application scenarios and achieve flexibility.

Multi-Cluster Federation: Should Networking Impact The Solution? - Anil Kumar Vishnoi & Thomas D. Nadeau, Red Hat
Federation in software is a broad and complex problem. Kubernetes is facing this as it’s next challenge which is specifically to provide a solution to the federation of multiple clusters at a high scale and level of networking performance. We have found that this is easier said than done as this space has a wide range of variation including size, data, networking, deployment logistics, etc.

We outline this problem statement from a networking perspective. We do this first and foremost because we have found that how networking is implemented in a k8s cluster to be a critical aspect of any large scale deployment. Furthermore, we will discuss some available solutions in federation (e.g Istio, KubeFed), and explore how the design of these solutions is impacted by various network connectivity models, and the design patterns emerging out of these solutions catering to various networking requirements. Finally, we touch on performance impacts.

Automating the Journey to Cloud Native Intelligent Networks - Denis Murphy, IBM Hybrid Cloud
To achieve radical efficiencies in network operations, we need to exploit the core principles of cloud-native network architectures.  A network cloud operations model is driven by a software-defined representation of services & resources at various layers –and the focus is on DevOps, continuous integration and automation. A network cloud operations model is also explicitly focused on avoiding reactive work –through capabilities such as auto-scaling, healing, closed-loop automations, change impact analysis, etc…IBM, with Red Hat, is enabling a unified, open platform to accommodate a diverse set of workloads including Core, Edge, Far Edge, and IT on any infrastructure based on disaggregation of the network stack to create a modular and layered architecture. Monitoring eBay's Complex Network Infrastructure - Amber Vaidya, eBay
eBay's network and central operations teams need the ability to observe its massive network infrastructure to meet eBay's availability goals.

While tools are available to detect hard device failures, the majority of issues in this infrastructure arise from "gray failures". These result in either application latency or failures that are detrimental to smooth operations.
Given the complexity of our network, these "gray failures" are a non-trivial problem to detect.

NetVision is an agent-based, end-to-end observability platform for context-based data plane monitoring of eBay's network. It is designed to identify partial packet losses along with hard device failures in the network and is particularly useful in identifying the location of the issue in the complex network topology.
Using a combination of end-to-end UDP probing, master/agent architecture and intelligent algorithms, NetVision has been effective in identifying network issues quickly thereby reducing the time to detect issues.

Building and Managing VNF/ CNF Platforms to Support 5G at Scale - Gene Bagwell, Verizon
Verizon is deploying its 5G infrastructure as an all virtual service offering using the Verizon Cloud Platform (VCP), its private cloud infrastructure based on OpenStack and Kubernetes.

In this presentation, we will examine how Verizon is expanding and scaling its virtualization platforms to support its national rollout of 5G.

Examples will include tools, processes, and procedures needed to facilitate zero-touch deployment, discovery, and provisioning of the hardware and building a Services Based Architecture to support VRAN in tens of thousands of cell sites, and 5G core for hundreds of millions of POPs.

When deploying applications at the edge, containers are all the rage and Kubernetes is making its way out of the cloud data center but the IoT edge requires additional considerations in areas such as security and scalability. Characterized by assets such as factory floors, oil rigs, wind turbines and vehicles, the IoT edge involves an inherently heterogenous mix of technologies and domain knowledge and we need to tame the complexity by enabling a variety of deployment models in a more open and standardized way.

Part of LF Edge, Project EVE aims to do for the IoT edge what Android did for mobile by creating an open computing engine that simplifies the development, orchestration and security of both legacy and cloud-native applications on distributed edge hardware. Supporting containers, VMs and unikernels, EVE provides a flexible foundation for IoT edge computing deployments with choice of hardware, application and cloud.

This session will highlight the key challenges of edge computing, the unique requirements of the IoT edge and why EVE is critical for IoT scale by serving as an open, standardized edge computing engine. We will host a brief demo and talk to what’s next, including integrating EVE with Kubernetes to extend the benefits from the data center to the IoT edge.

Virtualization is evolving to containerized workloads orchestrated by Kubernetes because of simpler deployment and management than with virtual machines. However, there are concerns that containers are not as secure as virtual machines, and that Kubernetes orchestration can introduce additional risks.

These concerns, both real and perceived, will be described by the speakers, with specific concentration on the risk to the security of the container isolation model. The heart of the talk is a presentation of joint efforts by CNTT and ONAP to define practical security architectures, controls and tests for NFVi with Kubernetes that addresses the realities of such deployments, such as ensuring isolation among cloud native network functions (CNF) with differing operating system privilege requirements. Finally, the speakers present both hardware and software isolation solutions for sandboxing less trusted Edge workloads.

The Edge Lab is an open reference architecture that accelerates collaboration by providing a proven, repeatable and portal automation stack for edge infrastructure. The lab is modular and vendor neutral so that components can be changed out easily.

This presentation shows the initial design: 4 RPis installing K3s in a self-contained PXE cluster. The small four system physical cluster explores how a real bare metal cluster would operate in an edge environment. Session will build a real working cluster from nothing.

Once installed, the Edge Lab enable fast resets of the environment via automation and maintains ongoing operations for the system via APIs. The cluster demo goes from completely fresh RPi through a complete system life cycle including installing K3s to demonstrate a usable Edge environment.

Edge computing with 5G creates tremendous opportunities in every industry. It brings computation and data storage closer to where data is generated, enabling better data control, reduced costs, faster insights and actions, and continuous operations. 5G also offers telcos an opportunity to deliver services to enterprise customers.  What must Telcos do to make a success of Edge computing?

Developers are focused on making new services easy to deploy and operate. They have adopted container platforms, like Kubernetes, that enable automation and scalability. Recently announced project DENT provides a platform to bring Open Linux Networking to campus and edge networking ecosystem players. DENT strives to build an Open Network Operating system based on Linux standard networking switchdev hardware acceleration model. This will enable networking hardware vendors to leverage the same benefits that all Linux hardware do today: Open Linux firmware management, platform driver infrastructure, Linux networking protocols, tools and ecosystem. With DENT, every switch is basically a Linux server with multiple data-plane ports. In edge deployments where rack space is critical, native Linux networking architecture can optimize, unify and simplify the infrastructure. It has certainly been a wild ride, from the first meeting at ONS San Jose; not only has the CNTT struck a chord with the LF Networking community, but it shipped the Botrange release in September, Snezka in January, and Baldy in June. Telecoms are deploying Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) to support critical business services.

However, the telecom community has struggled with too many custom solutions – just the opposite of the NFV promise. To address this gap, CNTT was created by a coalition of global companies to create models, architectures, and deployments to share with the larger community, with the goal of increasing interoperability, and simplifying infrastructure testing. After an introduction to the CNTT framework, we will discuss how the task force built so much in so little time. Starting from the organizational structure, the joint GSMA/OPNFV sponsorship, and details of the effort to build a common reference language and architecture.

We had decided to use our Akraino uMEC project in Junction which is the biggest hackathon in Europe. Our concept was to use a scaled-down version of a smart city, with sensors and servers running in lightpoles. All servers were in the same k3s cluster and connected to the Internet.

We wanted to make it possible for developers to create applications that can run on the cluster, and do it in 48 hours or less! We also wanted to leverage ETSI MEC, kubernetes, REST interfaces, and microservice architecture.

After some brainstorming, we realized that serverless is the perfect solution! It supports the selected architecture while removing most of the boilerplate code that writing a normal Kubernetes application requires. After we selected OpenFAAS as our serverless platform, we also realized that we can use the OpenFAAS Cloud for user management.

This presentation details our journey to leveraging OpenFAAS and what we learned.

As a basis for realizing various future automotive services such as intelligent driving and Mobility as a Service (MaaS), expectations for connected cars are increasing. In 2025, it is estimated that 100 million cars worldwide will be connected to the network, and 1 to 10 EB of data traffic will be generated between vehicles and the cloud per month, which will significantly increase the load on the network. Edge Computing is expected to be applied as one of the solutions to this problem, and various efforts are being made by both academia and industry.

In this presentation, we describe the use cases and requirements for connected cars that we expect to use Edge Computing. We also introduce the network and distributed computing architecture to realize Edge Computing for connected cars, and the state and future prospects of PoC development using open source softeare such as Kubernetes.

Representatives from AT&T (Moderator), CommScope, Ericsson, and Nokia (in alphabetical order) will discuss results of the O-RAN Plugfest session that took place in North America within one of the of three Innovation Zones recently designated by the FCC. The Plugfest demonstrated LCM/FCAPS use cases developed by ONAP and OSC project teams in the context of an O-RAN framework. The use cases to be discussed include (1) Physical Network Function (PNF) Plug and Play, a 3GPP-aligned O1 interface use case that enables service providers to have the PNFs discovered by Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) via PNF registration handler; (2) Bulk Performance Management Data Collection, also a 3GPP-aligned O1 interface use case; (3) Basic O1 interface functionality for Configuration, Performance, and Fault Management of multi-vendor PNFs via a vendor-agnostic SMO; (4) basic network optimization (as intended by A1 interface) of PCI (Physical Cell ID) / RSI (Root Sequence Index). The panel will also provide an update of the next O-RAN Plugfest that will take place at the end of September 2020.

5G MEC Open Source Platform and Practice Demo - Chuanyu Chen, Huawei
In this presentation, Chuanyu will introduce an open-source platform for 5G MEC aiming at providing an end-to-end solution for Enterprise applications, i.e., industrial park, Cloud VR, Video Streaming/Orchestration, etc.

This platform contains the ETSI standards defined MEP and a simple MEC manager for Enterprise. It also contains plenty of tools for developers, such as application porting, function optimization, deployment optimization, simulation of arm instructions over x86, etc.

By generally considering the needs of the telco-edge industry, this 5G open-source platform will also provide a variety of capabilities for applications and allow customizations. In this way, developers are more likely to deliver their applications faster and let providers build their own ecosystem.

Injecting Security to the Cloud - Susan Hinrichs, Verizon Media
In the last few years, Yahoo applications have been moving from Yahoo-only data centers to a hybrid cloud model of corporate data centers and public cloud resources. Once Yahoo was acquired by Verizon, the need to coordinate between Yahoo and Verizon data centers was added to the mix. Moving from a simple single data center model to a multi-origination model required the applications to move from a simple minded authentication model that relied to a large degree on knowledge of corporate IP addresses. In addition application communication between data-center entities required strong encryption when crossing the Internet. Verizon Media leveraged two open source products to securely enable this hybrid cloud migration: Athenz for authentication and authorization, and Apache Traffic Server for consistent policy enforcement and communication encryption. In this presentation Susan will describe how these open source technologies were used and highlight the challenges encountered.

Simplifying Edge Computing Operations with SaaS Management - Madhura Maskasky, Platform9 & Naveen Byreddy, Mavenir
IT/Ops have historically managed a limited set of data centers (e.g., their own, cloud providers’, etc.), and they have managed a large number of end-user devices (mobile phones, etc.). Edge computing combines these requirements into a uniquely new problem — managing the scale of many (dozens, hundreds, many thousands) of strange pseudo-data centers that need to be managed with low or no touch (usually with no staff and little access).

Given the large scale, traditional data center management processes won’t apply; especially given that these edge sites may have limited technical staff or skills. This means that the simplicity of operations and automation will be critical.

To add to this, the rise of containers means that edge management involves managing not only virtual machines; but also containers.

In this talk, we present the operational challenges of traditional data-center management architectures and propose a new approach for edge compute management: SaaS management.

Architectural Patterns and Practices to Minimize Provider Lock-ins with Serverless! - Murali Kaundinya
Enterprises need an architecture strategy that would preserve portability and avoid lock-ins with serverless. While containerization and poly-cloud strategies preserve options, the compelling value proposition of Serverless architectures for some workloads necessitate careful thought to portability standards. Enterprises have to carefully evaluate lambda architectures and invest in the creation of their own standards, patterns and best practices to ensure that they don't prematurely suffer from provider lock-ins. Interestingly enough, serverless and lambda architectures are not exclusive to the cloud and enterprises are not at the mercy of cloud providers alone. Serverless can be fully managed on on-prem platforms and adapted to hybrid and public cloud dynamically. In this talk, Murali with take a deep technical look at the serverless architecture and identify patterns and practices that would preserve the portability from on-prem models to hybrid, public and poly cloud models.

An indigenous end-to-end 5G test bed sponsored by the Government of India is being developed by a number of leading academic institutions (Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Science), R&D centers and several industry partners. The test bed’s objectives are to promote indigenous R&D, foster research and innovation, and be a real-world ‘lab’ for academia, industries and start-ups. So, it is essential that the components are developed indigenously or open source is leveraged to provide a level playing ground for everyone. For the orchestration layer, ONAP open source was chosen as the base platform, upon which functional and non-functional enhancements are being implemented to realize various 5G use cases. ONAP’s architecture, components and open interfaces enable customizations and generic enhancements to realize new use cases, thus fulfilling the test bed’s objectives. This presentation covers the journey so far, best practices and lessons learnt, and the road ahead.

CI-CT-CD, Devops Loop for the Future Telco Cloud - Fu Qiao, China Mobile
One of the original intentions of NFV is to decrease the TTM of Telco. As most of the Telco Operators are moving their network to the cloud, they are also keen to transform their service launching process in order to fit into the new cloud. In this talk, we would like to share the DevOps loop China Mobile has built from Vendors labs to China Mobile’s Integration Lab and to the NFV commercial Cloud located in Guangdong Province. Such a loop, which we called as CI-CT-CD (Continuous Integration-continuous Testing – Continuous Delivery), provides the capability for Telco Operators to quickly and continuously test the up-to-date software innovation and deliver it to the cloud for customer use. With the help of such a loop, we are capable of testing a new NFVi software update in 30hours and deliver it to the commercial cloud in one day. In this talk, we would like to share the experience and lessons learned for such a new approach. We would also like to announce our plan for contributing to OPNFV 2.0.
